Fall in love with the Broadway theater, and sooner or later you will probably find yourself developing an ancillary ardor for Broadway theaters — the grand old buildings themselves, I mean, irrespective of the hits and flops that inhabit them. The most beautiful are splendid representations of architecture styles in fashion in the early decades of the 20th century. And like most old buildings with character, the great Broadway houses — and even some of the not-so-great ones — seem to absorb some of the historical mystique that passes through. I got to thinking about this on a recent tour of the refurbished Belasco Theater, the 44th St playhouse that’s one of the few Broadway theaters located east of Times Square. . . .
