Demolition of the former Wintergarden Theater began on Saturday.
The theater was built during World War I and became an unprofitable investment for its owners in the 1980s, when it was closed. The North Main Street building remained vacant ever since.
Once demolition is complete, plans call for the restoration of Mechanics Alley to include parking and the redevelopment of the theater property to include an outdoor expansion for The Wine Cellar and a public courtyard off North Main Street.
