ORGANIST RON RHODE HEADLINES SHOWS THIS WEEKEND
The Dixon Theatre, in Dixon, Illinois (boyhood home of Ronald Reagan) hosts three events to inaugurate its newly installed Barton Theatre Pipe Organ. Ron Rhode accompanies “Safety Last” the Harold Lloyd silent comedy on Friday Oct. 15 at 7pm. $10
On Saturday Oct 16 at 1pm organ builders Carlton Smith (Indianapolis builder who assembled and restored the components of the organ) and Jeff Weiler (a Chicago THS member who helped on the project) demonstrate the organ and give its history. Free.
At 7pm that night Ron Rhode returns to the console for an organ show and sing-along. $10.
The organ is now a 3 manual, 12 rank instrument. The Barton console was originally in the Colonial Theatre, Milwaukee. The basis for the chests and mechanicals is the 2 manual 7 rank Barton from the Englert Theatre, Iowa City, Iowa. The Dixon originally had a 3 manual 9 rank Barton which was removed some time ago.
Weiler is consulting on repairs to the Wurlitzer pipe organ in the Paramount, Cedar Raids, Iowa and is restoring the Barton organ at the former Iowa Theatre, also in Cedar Rapids. Both organs are original to the theatres. The organs and the theatres suffered damage in the floods there two years ago.
