Morton Theatre celebrates its 100th anniversary

The theater, a cornerstone of Athens history, saw such legendary performers as Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway grace its stage during the 1920s and 1930s.

Neglected for decades, volunteers and Athens-Clarke County restored it to its heyday in the 1980s and early ’90s, but the venue hasn’t reached its full potential.
“That next step never really happened for this facility,” Theater Assistant Lynn Battle Green said. “Something got lost in the translation that never really propelled the building forward.”
