A $10.5 million plan for building a conference center and parking deck in downtown Gastonia, and helping to fund a Schiele Museum renovation, earned a formal thumbs-up Tuesday.
A companion proposal for turning the historic Webb Theater into a restaurant did not.
As part of the downtown plan, Palenick had proposed spending $700,000 in hotel tax revenue to renovate the Webb Theater on South Street and lease it to a restaurant and catering business. But City Council members and the Tourism Development Authority were uncomfortable with backing that proposal.
“I’d like to bring more people into the discussion before Mr. Palenick gets too far down the road (on a restaurant design),” said Councilman Dave Kirlin. “If we change the nature of that building once and for all, gut it and make it a dining facility, we’ve lost the only performance venue we ever had downtown.”
