Friends of the Boyd Weekly Update: Apes

Thanks to volunteer researcher VINCE YOUNG for his discovery of another
WORLD PREMIERE that was held at the Boyd.

A special midnight World Premiere of “Battle for the Planet of the Apes” was
held on May 23, 1973 at the SamEric (as the Boyd was then called). The
premiere immediately followed a one day “Philadelphia Goes Ape for a Day”
marathon at the SamEric of the first four “Planet of the Apes” movies.

Other world premieres we are aware of at the Boyd are “Kitty Foyle” in 1940,
“That Midnight Kiss” in 1949 with Philadelphia star Mario Lanza appearing
on stage, and “Philadelphia” in 1993, with star appearances that included Tom Hanks and
Denzel Washington. Friends of the Boyd continue to document the history of
Philadelphia’s last surviving downtown movie palace. If you know of other
world premieres that were held at the Boyd (SamEric) let us know!
