FUNDED: Macon, GA – Douglass Theatre

MACON AND BIBB COUNTY: Leaders vow to set differences aside to help halls of fameLast year’s legislative session re-exposed the fault lines that exist in Macon and Bibb County’s legislative delegation, as well as the communities they represent.

Republicans and Democrats couldn’t even agree to meet in the same room at one point, and their disagreements ended up killing a proposal to add a penny to the area’s hotel-motel sales tax. That penny was going to help fund the Georgia sports and music halls of fame.

Those relationships aren’t exactly patched, but both sides say they’ve struck a compromise and will vote to increase the hotel-motel tax this time out. The two state-funded museums — which seem to perpetually be on the state’s budgetary chopping block — will get a funding boost, as will the historic Douglass Theatre in downtown Macon.
