NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – The National Park Service is giving money to help restore a historic theater on the grounds of the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport .
The grant amount is scheduled to be announced Wednesday at the Casino Theatre .
The theater was built in 1880 and designed by renowned architect Stanford White, whose other work includes Gilded Age mansions in Newport and on New York’s Fifth Avenue.
The theater closed more than 20 years ago, and is in the midst of extensive renovations. It will eventually be used as the main performance space for Salve Regina University , but will also be available to the community and the
tennis hall of fame.
