The Newton City Commission on Tuesday night approved an agreement with the Newton Downtown Community Development Corp., a nonprofit group formed to carry out the recommendations of the City’s 2009 Downtown Master Plan.

The commission agreed to allocate $150,000 to the CDC, with an immediate payment of $50,000 and the balance to be disbursed at a future date, pending an additional request by the CDC.

The CDC had requested $150,000 in city funding, with its first intended project to be redevelopment of the Fox Theatre in conjunction with the owners, Historic Fox Theatre of Newton Inc. The group has developed a concept for making the Fox operational year-round, enhancing the performance and greenroom areas, and using the adjacent south building as a complementary dining and entertainment venue.

“These are successful business owners making a commitment to furthering business development in our community,” Mayor Racquel Thiesen said. “I want to help maximize that momentum.”
