ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (AP) – A theater in Rock Springs that has sat vacant for nearly 10 years is being refurbished.

The Rock Theatre was the premier and only functioning movie theater in Rock Springs for nearly 30 years. It featured a 758-seat auditorium with stage, auditorium, lobby, bathrooms and office space.

In June 2008, the Rock Springs Urban Renewal Agency and the city purchased the theater for $90,000 in an effort to restore, maintain and assist in economic development of the historic downtown area.

In January, a nearly $1.5 million grant was made available to help restore the theater.

Rock Springs Mayor Tim Kaumo says if everything goes as planned, the doors could be open in 2011.

Plans include expanding the lobby and stage area.
