Renovations to the historic Avalon Theatre in downtown Grand Junction are being pushed back after fundraising goals for the project fell short.

On Monday, the Grand Junction City Council met with the foundation board and decided to delay renovations until this fall after they learned the project was underfunded by 1.5 million.

The plan was to start construction next month. City Council has already committed over 3.1 million to the project with the DDA committing 3 million. The foundation raised over 800,000, and are asking for private investors to help meet the goal.

Development Director for the Cornerstone Project Robin Brown said, “It’s 90 years old and for its entire life…it’s been the cultural hub for Western Colorado.” (Click here to watch the newcast.)
