A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Woodstock Theatre, 209 Main St., was at 11 a.m. Sept. 12. Three Classic Cinemas-owned buildings along Main Street were knocked down in early August, and now demolition of two existing auditoriums is under way, leaving two screens open to the public during construction. Upon completion, the expanded Woodstock Theatre will feature eight auditoriums and restoration to its former glory of the 85-year-old original auditorium – complete with its authentic domed ceiling. Six auditoriums are slated to be completed by spring of 2013 and the remaining two, including the original, are slated to be completed by late summer 2013. Classic Cinemas, based in Downers Grove, is a family-owned company operated by Willis, Shirley and Chris Johnson. Established in 1978, Classic Cinemas operates 13 theaters with 100 screens in northern Illinois. Each auditorium is equipped with state-of-the-art 4K digital projection and sound technology.
