HBO’s Mildred Pierce set in Loews 175th

Howard Haas reports this “movie palace on screen” news. The fifth and concluding episode of HBO miniseries “Mildred Pierce” has scenes of the exterior and interior of The United Palace Theatre (Loews 175th St). As Mildred Pierce is set in Los Angeles though filmed in New York, the Loews is standing in for the demolished Paramount Theatre (Grauman’s Metropolitan) in 1939 when its original exotic decor was still on display.

I should have finished that last sentence with “when the Paramount was being used by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.”

When I was watching the miniseries, I figured it was filmed in LA but that theater’s identify puzzled me. An extra video explained it was filmed in NY so I guessed it was filmed in the Loews 175th. Then, I saw another video which identified that theater and explained the film makers were delighted to find the exterior of the Loews 175th looked just like the Paramount’s exterior.
