LATEST MARQUEE SENT TO ALL MEMBERS

The latest issue of our journal Marquee was sent to all THS members last Thursday Dec. 9. Look for it soon in your mailbox.

Grateful thanks to THS volunteers Bob Sheldon, Jim Indreika, Konrad Schiecke, Bill Reynolds, Cheryl Turner, Dan Smacny, Bob Boin, Dave Syfczak and Maryland member Jon Rudman who all lent a hand stuffing and sealing the contents of eleven mail sacks (weighing 346 pounds!) which made up this mailing. These mailing parities are always a lot of fun with folks chatting around the table about Chicago area theatres, movies old and new, and the topics of the day. All are welcome to join the group. Let Richard Sklenar know if you are interested in the next mailing party at THS HQ in Elmhurst, IL thrhistsoc@aol.com or (630) 782-1800.

Also in the envelope are the latest THS Newsletter, membership renewal forms for 2011, and a flier for the 2010 THS Conclave Slide Show DVD which is now on sale. See www.historictheatres.org to order.

This expanded issue of Marquee is a reprint of the theatre issue of the Architectural Terra Cotta Brochure Series published by the National Terra Cotta Society, ca. 1919. The original is held in the THS archive. There are handsome photos of some 37 theatres. Some are well known houses in Chicago or New York City. Others are completely new to us like the Modjeska in Augusta, Georgia or the Olympic, Buffalo, New York. All feature the unique, durable, easily decorated substance, terra cotta, which faced many a facade in the hey day of theatre design. There is also an essay which explains this versatile material.
