Loews Mayfair

It’s not just the secret porno theater at Playland Gifts that makes the block of 7th Avenue between 47th and 48th Streets a treasure trove of old Times Square for casual urban archaeologists. There’s much more here. On my recent visit to the block I came upon some artifacts from the lost Loew’s Mayfair theater. . . . . . . . .

I saw that blank marquee and the intriguing High Deco terra cotta above it for the first time in 1999, and again during the 2002 Conclave. I KNEW there had to be some great ornament surviving beyond the shuttered entrance. Nice to see my suspicions confirmed, and more than that, to see that much of it is still visible to the public. I hope it is still there the next time I make it to Manhattan.
