Marion, Ocala, Florida to stay First Run — For Now

Maroon at the Marion. How's that for an art deco font on their canopy ? Or is it Moderne ? And porthole doors, too. Star-Banner photo.

Miami THS member Dennis Wilhelm links us to a bit of good news. Is Ocala near Miami ?

“Unless the City of Ocala, Florida or Eastwynn Theatres, Inc. decides to end the agreement, Ocalans will be able to enjoy first-run movies at the Marion Theatre in Ocala’s downtown until Sept. 30, 2013 . . . “

While the Marion’s losses may look like a reason to close the theatre from a typical business point of view, certainly the added income to downtown businesses is something that should be taken into account, if there is this concerted effort to give downtown a boost, and not just simply save an architecturally-beloved theatre. Meanwhile, for the added months on the contract at the very least, that is even more chance that a few more citizens will get to experience movies in a classic setting, creating new memories.

This theatre was painted by Hyperrealist artist Davis Cone, and is in the first book about his work, “Hollywood on Main Street.”

And in my opinion, the theatre’s style should be classified as Moderne.

  2. Art Deco is sufficiently catch all but to be more specific, over at CinemaTreasures it is already characterized as Streamline Moderne (in agreement with Gary)
