More than eight years after buying Bay View’s Avalon Theater, Lee Barczak is set to begin a $2.5 million conversion of the long-closed building into a two-screen cinema with sit-down dining and a full bar.

Barczak is wrapping up arrangements to obtain a commercial loan to help finance the project. His general contractor has been obtaining bids and plans to begin the work this month, with Barczak hoping to have the theater open by Christmas.

City funding is being proposed to help the project. Ald. Tony Zielinski, whose south side district includes the neighborhood, plans to seek Common Council approval for $300,000 in grants for the Avalon’s restoration.

Along with preservation of a historic building, the Avalon will provide another attraction for people who visit Bay View’s restaurants, theater companies and taverns, said Zielinski and City Development Commissioner Rocky Marcoux.

“This is a very special project,” Zielinski said.

It’s been a long time coming.

“I’m happy to see it’s finally going to happen,” Marcoux said.
