Organist ROSA RIO

Sad news from THS Member TOM DELAY – forwarded to him by an associate involved with the Saenger in New Orleans:

Sadly, Rosa Rio died today at the age of 107.  She broke her hip about 6 weeks ago but was doing very well having gotten out of the hospital in only one week. She would have been 108 in June.

As you know she was one of the three organists that opened with the New Orleans Saenger in 1927 and was married to John Hammond the featured organist.

After Katrina she sent me a note and asked if they had raised the organ console.  She loved the theatre and the Robert Morton Organ was one of her her favorite organs. I had hoped that she might play it again. She often asked how the theatre was doing and I had sent her notes on the restoration.

She had a great life still playing concerts at 107.  Anyone would hope to do so well. She was a very kind and caring person that will be greatly missed.
