The Paramount Project exhibition, which will reveal the history of the former Paramount Theater in downtown Youngstown, will open Friday and run through Feb. 3 at the McDonough Museum of Art.The museum is on Wick Avenue, across from the Butler Institute of Art, on the Youngstown State University campus. With the help of YSU students, the McDonough assembled the exhibition, which includes photos, memorabilia and storytelling. Area residents who remember the theater shared their stories of it for a film that will be shown at the exhibition. The Paramount Theater, at the corner of West Federal and North Hazel streets, opened in 1918. It closed in 1976 and now is badly deteriorated.Plans call for razing the structure but leaving its terra-cotta facade standing as a book-end to a public parklet and performance space. The purpose of the Paramount Project exhibition, according to museum director Leslie Brothers, is to recall the rich history of the theater and to preview, through a simulation, the proposed design for the facade renovation and public square that will take its place. A benefit event — free and open to the public — will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 21 at the museum, which is at 523 Wick Ave.The McDonough is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
