BOUND BROOK — The Brook Arts Center board is asking Somerset County for a $113,000 grant to make emergency repairs to the brick building so its marquee renovation project can begin.
The Board of Freeholders is expected to review the request Tuesday. Feb. 9 Brick and mortar on the historic theater at 10 Hamilton St. has crumbled over the decades, said Bob Fazen, who serves as a historical consultant on the restoration project.
The brick work is buckling at the roofline and has to be secured in some parts of the building with a tarp. It must be repaired before the marquee work, which will involve temporarily removing the sign from the building, may commence.
“We don’t want the workers to be at risk,” Fazen said about the possibility of falling brick. Fazen said a major portion of the $113,000 brick repair project will involve reinforcing the theater wall with steel beams.
