Evanston City Council members gave city staff the go ahead Monday night to pursue a grant that could lead to a second life for the long-shuttered Varsity Theater as a downtown performing arts center.

Aldermen voted unanimously to commit $50,000 in matching funds toward a study sponsored by the National Endowment of the Arts that looks at art projects as economic development generators.

The move allows the city to submit a letter of intent to the NEA to go toward a matching grant opportunity through the endowment’s Mayor’s Institute on City Design 25th Anniversary Initiative. (For more information, visit arts.gov/grants/apply/MICD25/index.html )

Should the letter of intent to be improved — and Evanston has had previous success with the Mayor’s Institute program — then the city could be invited to submit a full proposal to support a feasibility study of the Varsity Theater space, at 1710 Sherman Ave., into a downtown performing arts center.
