Reopening: Elkhart, IN – Lerner Theatre

Elkhart Lerner Theatre will open in early 2011

Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore announced the city will be opening its doors to the new Lerner Theatre next year.

Using tax incremented funds along with borrowing from the Major Moves funds, the city is able to pay the $16 million to restore the old theater. Moore says there’s also been private donations.

He says he’s been challenged to help with economic development in the city and this is just one way to do that.

Moore says, “Well then the first thing yo do with economic development is make your city an attraction to others. You’re going to have to bring people here that say I wouldn’t mind coming here, I wouldn’t mind moving there.”

The theater should open in early 2011. The hope is to bring Broadway shows and movies there.
