Reopening: Landis Theatre, Vineland, NJ

Downtown progress is being made

February 1, 2010

Sometimes progress can be slow. Sometimes it seems like progress takes one step forward and then two steps back before taking another step forward.Three announcements this past week highlighted the slow but steady progress in the revitalization of Center City Vineland and the improvement of downtown Millville.

The first was the confirmation that Bernadette Peters — Grammy, Golden Globe and Tony award-winning singer and actress — will headline the May 22 opening-night gala at the Landis Theatre. It should be quite a night — not only because of the red-carpet affair, which will include a black-tie cocktail and a hors d’oeuvre reception, but more importantly because it will mark the restoration of the city’s historic theater that many thought would never happen.

The restoration of the theater and restaurant at Landis and East avenues is the cornerstone of downtown Vineland’s revitalization, along with the indoor farmers market and restaurant row. Its completion in May would be a clear sign that the effort, years in the planning and development stages, is moving ahead and going in the right direction.
