The Uptown Theater in downtown Napa is approaching its reopening as a live music venue.

Napa’s Uptown theater is almost ready for its close-up.

More than 100 construction workers, painters and contractors have converged on the downtown landmark in recent weeks in preparation for the first concert at the refurbished theater, scheduled for May 14.

During a tour on Tuesday morning, owner George Altamura proudly showed off the nearly finished venue.

“We’re down to the wire,” said Altamura, as he carefully stepped around the power cords that snaked throughout the building. Instead of the guitar solos and high notes that are soon to follow, the sounds of hammering and buzzing of power saws filled the cavernous space.

All 863 of the Uptown’s plush new seats stand at attention in neat rows, ready for their first guests. Almost all of the carpet is installed, most of the white marble tile entrance has been laid and new exterior chrome marquee signs await posters for display. In the center of the theater entrance, a cashier’s box office was being framed for construction.
