SWEETWATER — After three years, the Texas Theatre in Sweetwater will show a current movie.
Doors will open this weekend to show “Iron Man 2.” The Sweetwater cinema shut its doors to the public in 2007 when owners struggled to make a profit.
Then in January 2009, the Sweetwater Texas Theatre Acquisition and Renovation committee announced a campaign to begin raising funds to purchase the building from the previous owner.
Dr. Cody Wilkinson, a local optometrist, heads up the committee, which is made up of concerned citizens who did not want to see the theater waste away or torn down. The group, which included Mayor Greg Wortham, eventually accomplished the feat of purchasing the theater.
The theater is a historic landmark in Sweetwater, having stood there since 1935. According to the STTAR MySpace page, it was dedicated on Dec. 4, 1935, and was managed by Henry Rodgers Sr. for R&R Theaters.
