Summer sightseeing: Drive-in movie theaters in Central New York

An old Dodge sits parked out front of the Finger Lakes Drive-In along Routes 5&20 in Aurelius. The theatre opened on July 15, 1947 and continues to offer movies seven nights a week each summer, rain or shine, through Labor Day. Compared to the breathtaking quality of surround sound and special effects, tilting plush seats and giant cup holders, the drive-in movie theater has become a relic of simpler times. But those of you who still crave the old-fashioned pastime need not travel far to catch a flick. There are five drive-in theaters within a 90-minute drive (give or take a few minutes) from Syracuse that are open for the summer.
Some of the theater’s movies might be a couple of weeks behind the major cinemas — the Midway is playing “The Last Airbender” and “Date Night” this weekend — but the super-discounted price and timeless atmosphere are worth the wait.
