Theatre Photographer Martha Swope Donates Archives to New York Public Library

Veteran theatre and dance photographer Martha Swope has donated her archives, including photos from the original productions of A Chorus Line and Sweeney Todd, to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, according to Variety.
Swope donated her archives of contact sheets, slides, digital scans and negatives, consisting of some 1,520,000 images and covering 30-40 years of her career from the late 1950’s to the mid 1990’s. Swope retired in 1994.
Swope will assist the library in labeling and captioning the images, which will also be [stored] digitally. The library intends to scan roughly 15 images per major production from the archive.
The collection also boasts images from West Side Story, 42nd Street, A Moon for the Misbegotten, Annie and Of Mice and Men. Images from the dance world capture Martha Graham, Paul Taylor, George Balanchine and Mikhail Baryshnikov.
Swope received the 2004 Tony Honor for Excellence. Her work has been published in Playbill, the New York Times, Newsweek, People and Life Magazine.
