Threatened: Miami Beach, FL – Jackie Gleason Theater

Miami Beach Theater Demolition Plan Angers Many

Miami Beach residents got a chance to express their opposition to a controversial plan to tear down a landmark.

Supporters of the Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater say the historic theater is an important part of the arts scene and it gives the neighborhood its character.

“I like the Fillmore Theater,” said Miami Beach resident Gail Frank told CBS4 after leaving a meeting Thursday night. “I go there often and attend events there. I think the neighborhood has a certain decorum about it.”

Expansion plans for the Miami Beach Convention Center would replace the theater with a high-rise hotel. Supporters of the expansion say a new hotel would bring more convention business to Miami Beach.
