Threatened: Rosendale, NY – Rosendale Theatre

Organization to update plans to save Rosendale Theatre

By John W. Barry • January 5, 2010

The Rosendale Theatre Collective, which is working to raise money and purchase the historic Rosendale Theatre, will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Rosendale Recreation Center, Route 32, Rosendale.

Anyone interested in volunteering for several committees the group has formed is encouraged to attend this meeting. The committees are Development/Fundraising, Physical Plant, Branding/Marketing and Press/Media. The group is also looking for volunteers to help stage upcoming fundraising events, including a dance party at the Rosendale Cafe Feb. 6 and Valentine’s art show, as well as an upcoming children’s events series and musical events.

Also, the Rosendale Theatre Collective on Thursday will offer an update on its overall fundraising efforts.

The organization recently signed a binder with the family that owns the Main Street venue and now has until April to seal the deal by lining up a half million dollars in financing. The binder gives the Rosendale Theatre Collective exclusive rights to purchase the theater until April.

The theater – a former casino that also once housed Rosendale’s fire trucks – is owned and run by Joan Cacchio of Pleasant Valley; her son, Michael, who grew up in Pleasant Valley and now lives in New Paltz; and Anthony Cacchio Jr. of New Paltz, who is Joan’s brother-in-law, and Michael’s uncle.

Joan Cacchio’s husband, Rocky, died last year. Both have been critical to the operation of the theater over the years, their son said.
