York Theatre by Dennis Wilhelm (2005)

We’re looking for vintage Theatre photos with SNOW!

Autumn is here and the holidays are just around the corner.  We’re looking for some vintage photos of theatres decorated for the holidays, theatres in the snow or anything similar.  This is a great modern photo of the York Theatre by THS member Dennis Wilhelm but for this project we’re looking for some vintage photos.  We send out plenty of note cards here in the office and we want something to use as a holiday card.  If you have some images that you would like to have us include in the collection and possibly use on a holiday card, send them to us here in the office.  If you have questions on acceptable formats or would like to upload digital files, email Executive Director Rick Fosbrink at execdirector@historictheatres.org.

To avoid copyright issues involved in my sending the photo directly to Archives or scanning it, check out p. 16 of my Arcadia book (with Jack Tillmany) THEATRES OF THE SAN FRANCISCO PENINSULA. It shows the New Colma Theatre in the city of Colma, just South of San Francisco (SF’s historic Cemetery city). You will notice a slight slushy layer of snow on the ground. The reason this photo was taken, we found out, was to record the highly unusual snowfall (c. 1933) in Colma. The “Colma” over-the-street electric sign, plus the sign of the theatre, show that it was indeed in that location. The Colma Theatre building still stands, now a bar and nightclub, and was given a simple Moderne facade following its Depression-era closure. Some ornamental plasterwork is still said to exist in the interior.
